This was favorite Valentine's Day EVER!! I received these two cards - in the mail! - the day before, so I knew they had big things planned for the day. Owen and I went to Natchez Trace and ran a couple miles together, then he me to Braum's for ice cream, and he paid! We sat outside the restaurant and ate ice cream together and just talked about life : )

Then I had almost a full afternoon to myself while Charlie took Eli grocery shopping and they prepped dinner. He came up to my room in his dress clothes and invited me to the Eli Cafe, he escorted me down the stairs, read me the menu, brought a color page and colored pencils to keep me and his brothers busy while they plated the first course, and then he carried the courses in and out of the dining room, being the perfect gentleman the whole time. Caesar salad, spaghetti and meatballs, grilled bread, lots of Italian desserts, Italian symphony music and all my favorite boys. What a special night!!

August 9, 2015

I'm beginning a new chapter in my training life and I love it so far! I've been wanting to participate in a triathlon for over a year now and I decided to finally bite the bullet! The TRI that I chose is only 4 weeks away so I have a lot of prep to do, but thankfully I have a pretty good base going in. The biggest thing I was lacking was the equipment, so over the course of a week I bought a 'tri kit' (the outfit), a swim cap, goggles, bike shoes and pedals and a helmet. It's a bit of an investment but I got a ton of really great clearance deals and I'm ready to go!

One Day 1 I did the whole distance of the sprint TRI (250m swim, 12 mile bike and 3 mile run) and it took me 1:26:55 right out of the gate. Not bad for never having done it before! We'll see if or how much I can improve over these 4 weeks...

Almost everything I needed for my first training day (missing: helmet, bike shoes and bike)

Cowtown Half Marathon

This should have been my race.

Two days before the big day DFW was slammed with a snow/ice storm bad enough that Cowtown decided to cancel the 5K/10K/Full Marathon/Ultra Marathon, but let the Half Marathon go on with a delayed start time. This is what the roads looked like about 12 hours before the race... ice, slush and awful. Amazingly, they pulled it off and cleared the course!

About 8:10 my corral started. Mile was was a little sketchy with icy patches and trying to get around other runners, so it was a bit slower than I wanted, but everything was working out ok and I hit my stride at mile 2. From them until mile 8.5 I was doing awesome. Even with the slow first mile, I was averaging 8:53 for those first 9 miles. I had run through the stockyards and saw Charlie and the boys cheering for me, which gave me a boost of energy and excitement for the second half of the race.

I knew that mile 9 was a huge hill. As I was running toward it, the girl next to me throws her hands in the air and yells "Are you kidding me? What are we supposed to do!?" and my first thought was "um, it's a hill... keep running!" ... THEN I SEE THE TRAIN. The train crossing arms are just coming down and there are train cars as far as the eye could see. There was nothing to do but stop and wait for it to pass. This was AWFUL for so many reasons. 1) It wrecks your time 2) It messes with your rhythm 3) It was freezing (literally) and within 30 seconds my muscles started to tighten 4) It basically turned into a second starting line for as crowded and antsy everyone was to begin again. I'm sure there are others, but that's enough for now : /

So it finally gets out of the way and the huge hill is straight ahead. It was pretty challenging to get back into a groove once my stride had been broken, and I was COLD. Charlie and the boys were at the top of the hill and waiting to cheer me on so they powered me through, but around mile 11 things started going wrong.

I was too cold and started losing my ability to focus my eyes, work my fingers, move my mouth to chew my stingers and lick my lips. I walked for a little and almost fell backwards while trying to move forward. I don't know how, but I made it to the finish line. I remember seeing on my watch 2:00:14 (I paused for the train)... but I was significantly slower after starting back up and feeling the cold. Those last four miles were way slower than they would have been if I hadn't stopped moving.

I basically fell into another runner and then a medic. He took me to the medic tent and they took my temperature - 96 degrees, hypothermic. They covered me in hot water bottles, gave me warm water to drink, took my soaked socks and shoes off, wrapped me in warming blankets and gave me Hot Hands to hold and it still took about 30 minutes to get my temp up to 98 degrees. It was insane.

All that to be said, I still PR'd for this race. 2:02:57 was my official chip time, but I'm exceptionally disappointed and pretty angry about the outcome. I was on pace for a sub 1:57 and that's about what I had expected based on my training. It stinks that the stupid train that was completely out of my control, mixed with the freezing temperatures and physical side effects of stopping for so long, wrecked my chances of making my goal. I'm trying to get over it, but I know that another half is in my future sooner than later. I need vindication!!

My boys are runners!! Eli's shoes arrived in the mail and they counted down the days until Saturday so we could 'all run together!' Owen couldn't wait to show Eli all the stops along the running route... the polar bear in someone's backyard, the lakes, the bridge - it was great! It was really a cold day, like 35 degrees, and they did awesome. This was a hot chocolate kind of day! Average pace 10:45!

Eli was my dinner date for the evening. On the agenda was Steak n Shake and buying him running shoes so he could join me and Owen on the next run. He's all set!

November 9, 2014

I took Owen for his first three mile run and it was awesome! He didn't need to stop at all and kept a good pace the whole time. Final average was 10:59/mile. We ran around Andy Brown and talked the whole time, played games and took turns being the running leader. We got milkshakes after to celebrate the accomplishment. So fun!

October 17, 2014

Grapevine Faith's Homecoming was Friday night and we all went to support the school and team. About midway through the game Owen decided that he wanted to go for a run. He wasn't sure how many laps translated to a mile, but he caught on pretty quick, and then he decided that he was going to run three miles. Around mile 2.5 I asked him if he wanted to keep going and he looked at me like I was crazy and responded "well, yeah. If I want to run three miles then I have to run two more laps" and off he ran! His motivation and determination really helped me a couple days later during my half! My six year old is my hero : ) While he was running three miles, Eli was working on running two miles, and he completed them with flying colors. These boys are working hard to get to the point where they can run with me!
