August 1, 2009

We took our first road trip in Arizona to Sedona and Flagstaff on Saturday. It was about 110 in Scottsdale, so we opted to drive north (about 7000 feet higher in elevation!) to escape the heat and enjoy the summertime weather we're used to - instead of being trapped inside all day.

We had been to both places back in 2005 when we went to the Grand Canyon, but the beauty of Sedona never gets old. The red rocks, the quaint small town feel, the great restaurants... it was awesome. We ate lunch there and then decided to press on to Flagstaff where it would be much cooler weather. As we descended the mountain, we could actually feel the car window getting cooler. By the time we got there, we didn't even need the air conditioner anymore! We drove straight to the Snow Bowl, a ski resort, to ride the chair lift to the top of the highest point in AZ - 11500 feet! The lift ride was about 40 minutes each way, which got a little stressful with two squirmy babies when you're 50 feet off the ground, but we made it up and back in one piece and the boys slept the entire way home. Cool mountain air will do that to you!

Bell Rock, the most famous peak in Sedona.

Looking 50 feet down at the ground.

The lift. If they would have loaded every car instead of every other, the wait in line wouldn't have been bad at all. With babies though, every minute counts.

The view of the valley below. There was actually a forest fire in the distance that had been burning for a little over a week. They said they were just going to let it burn out itself.

Speaks for itself.

The birch trees were beautiful, and such a stark change from the cacti of the lower elevation. The contrast of the white bark with the dark blue sky was definitely photo-worthy.
